What is the Immune System?
The immune system is a collection of billions of cells that travel through the bloodstream. They move in and out of tissues and organs, defending the body against foreign bodies (antigens), such as bacteria, viruses and cancerous cells.
In addition to defending against or keeping out germs like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, your immune system also has a secondary response. If it senses something in your body that could be bad for you, it triggers the release of special cells. These travel to where the trouble is, attack the intruder, and help get rid of it.

The collection of these microbes is known as the microbiome. Your microbiome is unique, it’s not like your neighbors. And it contains a collection of the microbes you’ve collected or consumed. But, there are good microbes and harmful ones. Good ones, such as probiotics, can help us.
Your body is composed almost entirely of proteins. Organs, cells, muscles and almost everything else in your body, is composed of proteins (except the water of course). The cells in your body are under constant attack from all types of threats – from viruses to pathogens to chemicals. Each one of these poses a different type of threat, but when a virus enters the body, it can take over cells and replicate. To prevent this, your body has an immune system, composed of different defenses.
The primary immune system responds to a threat, attacks it, and “fights off” the invader. There are several ways that your body does this. Another way it defense itself is by identifying the compromised cell and then destroying it. This secondary response contains what are known as anti-bodies and make it possible for your bodies defense system to eliminate the threat.
How Does The Immune System Work?
And how does your body deal with them?
The immune system is your body’s defense system. It’s important to know that there are good bacteria and bad bacteria. These microscopic, living organisms are known as microbes. They are too small to be seen by the human eye but are found literally everywhere, including living on our bodies and in our gut.
The most common types are bacteria, viruses and fungi. Most of these microbes are in a symbiotic relationship with us, they help us to break down food, eliminate waste and protect us. But, of course, some are bad.
Some microbes, such as viruses, can invade the body and infect our cells, replicating and spreading throughout the body.

Some microbes, such as viruses, can invade the body and infect our cells, replicating and spreading throughout the body. In order to protect the body, your immune system’s defense system looks for antigens – bacteria, viruses or fungi that can harm the cells.

If a threat is detected, your body sends out signals and summons help – this is known as an immune response – your body is responding to a threat.
Your body’s immune defense consists of several different parts – there are antibodies which can locate the infected cells, attach to them, and stop their progress. They can also signal immune cells, which will attack and attempt to kill the infected cells.
